We would love to help you! I do have a few requirements before I will consider adopting to another Rattery...
I DO NOT adopt stock to breeder mills, pet stores, or individuals that do not keep health and pedigree records on their animals. I’m sorry but there are no exceptions to this rule.
Honesty and integrity! I run my Rattery on honesty and integrity and will only adopt to those that do the same.
Your Rattery must have an up to date, maintained website. I understand that not all ratteries have a website but I feel its a very important adoption tool. It allows adopters to find you and give loving and responsible homes to your babies. It allows other ratteries to learn about you and your breeding ethics and goals. Because of these reasons, I set it as a requirement.
You must have good breeding ethics and logical breeding goals. While I am a very open minded individual I do set requirements in this area. If your breeding goals are a bit "off the beaten path" dont be afraid to explain. I love to talk to fellow rat breeders and perhaps there is something we can learn from each other. I am open to new thoughts and ideas!
You must have a firm grasp on the genetics of your specialties, this is very important in planning your Rattery goals. I understand its impossible to "know it all" but you should be well versed in your own specialties and goals. If you need help or are extremely new no worries, I am happy to answer questions and help out wherever I can before adoption.
You must be registered breeder with NARR, The North American Rat Registry. NARR is a very important tool in knowing the background of the rats you are working with. It is constantly updated giving new information on the lines you are working with based on what other ratteries have experienced. It also allows you unlimited access to a huge database to research existing and new lines. Your breeder rats must be registered with NARR. The rats you adopt from me, and their offspring MUST be registered. You will be required to contract those that adopt lines related to mine to do the same.
There are other things I look for in a responsible breeder. You will be asked a lot of questions but please know that you will be considered with an open mind. If you dont have all these bases covered its ok too. Email me while you are working to achieve these and we can work on it together!
When checking the background on rat that I have personally registered with The North American Rat Registry NARR I use a scale to describe my rats temperament and health...
Excellent - Excellent means just that. Example: Health; the rat has never been sick or showed a sign of being weak in any way. Temperament; he has never shown any aggression or ill temper to humans or rats.
Good - Your average animal. Example: Health; your average rat, perhaps has been sick once but recovered quickly. Temperament; is of your average rat, perhaps has a scuffle once and a while with another over a food item or toy. Nothing serious, and typically average.
Fair - A borderline unbreedable rat. Example: Health; he has been sick once or twice and does not recover well, weak immune system. Temperament; above average aggression issues, scraps often with colony members with no visual motive.
Poor - Undesirable breeding animal. Example: Health; Weak immune system causing a chronically ill or weak animal with slow recovery rate to any illness. Temperament; Extreme aggression issues causing constant tension in the cage and even wounding or killing colony members.
Ofcorse these guidelines can vary from rat to rat and any exceptions will be listed. If you see a CMMR registered rat in your rats pedigree and you want more information please email me. I will be happy to answer any additional questions you may have about the rat.
